![]() 1st Annual Jaycee Tractor Pull A Roaring Success July 2000 ![]() Roaring as in noise. When the drivers got their motors wound up you could hear the noise all over town. The loudest were the high pitched pickups when they reached the 6,000 to 7,000 rpm figure. Had any of those pickups blown a motor no one would have been surprised. In order to reach that 6,000 rpm level, a motor must be finely tuned, balanced and all systems working 100 percent or that is exactly what would happen, a blown motor. The tractors varied in weight from 5,500 pounds up to 18,500 pounds. Many of the tractors are used for pulling contests only and others looked like they had just been driven in from the hay field. The owners of these machines take great pride in both how the tractor looks and how it performs. One JD 4010, looked like it just came off the dealers floor but those 4010’s were made in the 1950’s. The Jaycees obtained 63 sponsors for the contest. Humboldt sponsors were: Humboldt Impl. Co., Humboldt Specialty Mfg. Co., Humboldt Standard, Lewis Impl. Co., Rogge Hardware, Snethen & Sons, State Bank of Table Rock, Wilhelm Grain, Best Printing, Rosie’s Floral, Blecha 66, Bob’s Auto Care, Colonial Acres, CJ’s Longbranch Saloon, Fank-hauser/Werts Attorneys, First Federal Lincoln Bank, Humboldt Hog Mkt., Humboldt Lumber, Leech Ins. Ag., One Stop Beauty Shop, Pizza & Stuff, Bogle’s Auto Parts, Cardinal Mini Services, Consolidated Nutrition, Country Cookin’ Cafe, Humboldt Farm Service, Jack and Jill, Merritt’s Cabinets, Stalder Bros. Auto. Other merchants donations came from these neighboring towns: Pawnee City, Dawson, Sabetha, Bern, Table Rock, Auburn, Stella, Centralia and Seneca. The crowd was estimated at 500, including the drivers and Jaycees, plus another 50 or so who sat outside of the arena and watched the contest without paying. The Humboldt Area Jaycees chapter is already formulating plans for the 2nd Annual Tractor and Pickup contest for next July 14 or 15. The contest was a success for all; the audience probably received even more than they expected in the way of dust and smoke. The drivers placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, all received a cash prize. The hardworking Jaycees earned every nickel of profit they made and the town of Humboldt was put on the map once again.
